This week in freshman seminar Dr. Segun Gbadegesin lead the lecture, but he did not come alone. Dr. Gbadegesin was accompanied by a man with a drum. My first reaction was confusion, I did not know what to expect from this man with a drum. Dr. Gbadegesin went on the explain the drummer and how in the community he was expected to be honest. He was to be honest because he was the interpreter of the messages of the other drummers, and the community trusted him. He also told us the story about Iwa, and how Orunmila mistreated Iwa and ended up loosing her. Orunmila had to do everything he could to get his wife Iwa back. And the different morals that could be taken from this story in my opinion are all great. But the one that stood out to me the most was to not lose your "being nor character". Growing up we don't her about the ethics of the Africans as if they do not exist. But to my delight there are examples of them dating many years before the Greeks. One example were the "Pyramid texts" and the "Coffin texts" which are similar to the "Ten Commandments". This is awesome to me because this once again shows that we were and are a great people. During this lecture it was proven that we paved the way for the "Greeks" and the "Romans" not the other way around.
